Monday morning Madison police responded to a bank robbery at Home Savings Bank, 3672 E. Washington Ave. The robbery is the latest in an unusually high number that have occurred in Madison this year.
According to police, the suspect entered the bank shortly after 9 a.m. and handed the teller a note demanding money. The suspect indicated he had a weapon, but did not display it. He fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash.
Madison police arrived on the scene at 9:37 a.m. and tried to track the suspect with a canine unit, but were unable to make any arrests.
Witnesses described the suspect as a 6-foot, 200-pound black male with short grey-flecked dark hair. At the time of the robbery, he was wearing a fleece jacket and jean shorts. The police report did not list an age for the suspect.
While police have not made any arrests in conjunction with the robbery, Public Information Officer Mike Hanson said Madison police have begun their inquiry into the case, and the investigation remains open.
""We'll use evidence collected at the scene and surveillance videos to try and piece this thing together,"" Hanson said. ""From there, we'll see if it's somebody we know or somebody someone else knows.""
Representatives of Home Savings Bank were unavailable for comment.
