The university announced Aug. 30 the renaming of the Social Sciences building for the late UW-Madison chancellor and sociologist William H. Sewell.
The rechristening of the building housing many of the College of Letters and Sciences liberal arts classes like sociology, economics and history is slated for Sept. 15 and will be commemorated by two symposia: ""Facing the Future of Social Science Research"" and ""Can Social Science Research Contribute to Public Policy Decisions?""
Sewell is noted for his sociological research at the university as well as for his stint as chancellor during the height of Vietnam unrest in 1967 and 1968.
Sewell died in 2001 at the age of 91.
