Six Madison high school students recorded perfect scores on the ACT last spring, accounting for more than half of the perfect scores statewide.
The students attend West, Memorial and East High School and all took the test in either April or June. Only 11 high school students in Wisconsin scored a perfect 36 during the same time frame.
The students were: Elaine Brow and Sakura Takemitsu of Memorial; Andrei Baiu, Mark Kelly and Samuel Poppe of West; and Claire Lynch of East.
In the last nine years, 12 Madison students have recorded perfect scores on the ACT.
According to the test's website, 64 percent of recent high school graduates who took the ACT scored of 22 or below. UW-Madison reports an average ACT score of 28.
The six Madison students— three boys and three girls—were honored for their scores at a West High School reception Friday. Each is currently a senior and none has committed to a college yet.
The ACT was altered significantly in 2004 to feature a writing test in addition to its traditional multiple-choice questions. Although the SAT is the primary placement test used of the east and west coasts, the ACT is widely popular within the Midwest.
