Over the weekend the men's golf team rode three top 10 finishes to take home first place at the Wolverine Intercollegiate in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Badgers shot a team score of 851 (285-279-287) and distanced themselves from the pack with a strong second day to beat second place Michigan by 11 strokes.
Leading the way was senior Garrett Jones, whose three-under par total of 210 (70-67-73) was good for a third place finish. He finished three shots behind winner Mitch Gillis of Oregon State. Jones' score keeps him on pace to eclipse the school record scoring average of 72.74 that he set two years ago.
Sophomores Dan Woltman and Tyler Obermueller each had excellent tournaments as well, finishing tied for fifth and eighth place. Woltman shot a one-under 212 (74-70-68) and Obermueller finished at even par 213 (70-72-71). Woltman, a Beaver Dam, Wis. native, played at Kentucky last year and has been a welcome addition to the squad, getting his second top ten in as many events this season.
Sophomore Pat Duffy and junior Jeff Kaiser rounded out the scoring for the Badgers. Duffy's seven-over 220 (72-73-75) was good for a tie for 38th while Kaiser's eight-over 221 (73-70-78) put him in a tie for 41st.
It was the second straight tournament that the Badgers had three top ten finishers. In the season opening tournament at the Mid Pines Intercollegiate in Pinehurst, N.C., Kaiser, Woltman and Jones finished fourth, eighth and ninth respectively.
They are back in action September 25-26 at the Mattaponi Springs Invitational in Richmond, Va.
The women's team, fresh off a win at the Badger Invitational, struggled at the Lady Northern Invitational in East Lansing, Mich. As a team they shot 931 (307-304-320) and finished 42 shots back of winner, Michigan State.
Individually the Badger women were led by a strong outing from junior Katie Elliot, whose eight-over 224 (74-75-75) was good for ninth place. Sophomore Jeana Dahl also had a solid round, finishing in 25th place after shooting a 16-over 232 (77-74-81).
Schuman honored
The victory wasn't the only reason to smile for men's head coach Jim Schuman. Over the weekend he was named one of the top 50 golf instructors in America by Golf Range Magazine.
Schuman is in his fourth year at Wisconsin and has previously been named PGA teacher of the year in Wisconsin in 2003. He was also the PGA player of the year in Wisconsin in 2001 and 2002.
