College students with heavy smoking habits—more than 10 cigarettes a day—have significantly more mental health problems, including depression and anxiety disorders, according to the August 2006 issue of Nicotine & Tobacco Research.
The study tested 503 college students, dividing the results into two groups after testing them in the areas of ""subjective well-being, psychiatric symptom severity and functional disability,"" or the effect of psychological problems on their lives, according to a University Communications release.
Those students tested below the 50th percentile possessed markedly greater psychological problems, and those who were heavy smokers were most often in the lower percentile half.
Notably, no discrepancies in psychological problems were found between light smokers and nonsmokers.
