An attempted mugging went awry early Saturday morning, with several men successfully fighting off their attackers.
According to a Madison police statement, three friends were walking on West Gorham Street together at approximately 3:30 a.m. Saturday when one of them left the group. A man soon approached him asking for a cigarette, but left when the 20-year-old from Poynette ""did not have the right brand.""
The 20-year-old then rejoined his friends and the three walked toward the Buckeye parking lot on 200 W. Gorham St. At the parking lot, the three men ran into three other men, among them the man who had earlier asked for a cigarette. As the two groups faced each other, the victims were attacked.
However, the three fought back against their attackers, according to police. One of the attackers pulled out a knife and demanded money, but was then punched in the face before the victims fled on foot.
Madison police continue to investigate the fight and say all three suspects are black men in their mid-twenties. One is specifically described as 5'9\ with a ""muscular build.""
