Club Majestic, 115 King St., is officially for sale.
Owners Nick and Jim Schiavo put the club on the market late last week after publicly declaring their desire to sell the property. They are currently asking $1.6 million for the building, which is being sold through First Weber Realty.
Originally a theater, the Majestic became a nightclub in 2006. Fights spilling out of the club during hip-hop DJ nights in recent months have led to increased police pressure on the Majestic.
In mid-September, Madison Police Chief Noble Wray announced several strict sanctions on the club's liquor license, including an order to end all live entertainment an hour before bar time and a ban on glass bottles.
According to Ald. Mike Verveer, District 4, the restrictions will be lifted if the club is sold. Verveer, who also is a member of Madison's Alcohol License Review Committee, said selling Club Majestic was the best thing the Schiavos could do to prevent future violence.
Throughout the spring and summer, when violence in and around Majestic was at its peak, the Schiavos maintained that criticism of the club's was racist. The Majestic's Friday and Saturday night hip-hop shows attracted many black patrons. Along with Kimia Lounge, 14 Mifflin St., Club Majestic was one of the few downtown clubs to feature hip-hop nights.
