Attorney General Peg Lautenschlager, D-Madison, recently appeared as a guest on the ""Tyra Banks Show,"" scheduled to air in September, to discuss Internet sex predators. Lautenschlager was chosen as a guest due to Wisconsin's standout performance in tracking down and monitoring sex offenders. Alongside her, appeared Eric Szatowski, special agent with the Wisconsin Department of Justice, who has employed enticement tactics resulting in the capture of numerous potential sex offenders.
Following Gov. Jim Doyle's SAFE initiative in 2005, coordination among law enforcement agencies has raised the rate of sex offender compliance to 88 percent from 82 percent on year ago; the national average is 76 percent. More recently, Doyle pledged $50 million to various programs for training criminal justice professionals in order to protect children from sexual predators and potential reoccurring offenders. The two Democrats, staunch supporters of this issue, are both up for re-election in the fall.
