Madison's City Council will vote tonight on a measure that would increase downtown parking fees.
The charge at city meters would increase by less than a dollar if the council votes to approve the fee hikes. In addition, the cost to park in city parking lots would also increase if the measure gains the necessary 11 votes in the council.
Supporters of increased parking fees have argued that the city needs more parking revenue to sustain its annual budget.
A part of the fee hike proposal would also extend the hours in which people must plug downtown parking meters. Currently, most downtown meters are in effect from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. If tonight's proposal passes the council, the hours would be extended to 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The meeting is open to the public and will allow time for citizens to voice their concern with the fee hike proposal.
