UW campus orgs host plethora of Earth Day events

As the nation's designated 24-hour period focusing on all things environmental nears, the UW-Madison campus is gearing up to promote Earth Day events for green\-inclined students. 

 

This Saturday, April 22, 2006, is Earth Day 2006, and various campus organizations have plans to celebrate—or mourn—the environment:  

 

 

 

  • Crusading against global warming, UW-Madison's Zoology 220 class will hold a teach-in titled ""Take Back Our Future"" Saturday, April 22, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Wisconsin Union Theatre.
  • Various professors and professors emeritus will speak on topics ranging from the history of Earth Day to local, national and international climate change to corporate risk-management strategies relating to global warming at the event.
  • One of the featured speakers, Gaylord Nelson Distinguished Professor for Environmental Studies and Atmospheric and Oceanic Science Jon Foley, is also the director of the UW-Madison Center for Sustainability and the Global Environment.
  • The UW-Madison Sierra Student Coalition is hosting an Earth Day Party tonight—Friday, April 21—beginning at 9 p.m. at the Phoenix Co-op, 636 Langdon St. The Coalition will hold its Earth Day Family Fun Fest Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Pyle Center, 702 Langdon St., complete with ""fun games, hands-on activities and informational booths for the whole family,"" according to its website. ""Environmental education that's entertaining, too!"" The event is part of the Wisconsin Union Directorate's Weekend of Service.
  • There will be an Earth Day Clean-Up at the Henry Vilas Zoo Saturday, as well—10 a.m. to 4 p.m., 606 S. Randall Ave. The clean up is also part of the Weekend of Service.
  • Another Weekend of Service event, the WisPIRG Trash Clean Up, will begin at 11 a.m. on Library Mall and proceed to the Lake Mendota shores.

All events are free and open to the public.
