State Senate approves emergency heating aid

The state Senate reached an agreement Thursday on Gov. Jim Doyle's proposal calling for emergency heating assistance for Wisconsin families.

The Senate voted 29-4, passing the legislation onto the Assembly for consideration. Doyle first outlined the $6 million emergency-aid package in his State of the State address January, asking for relief to combat the rapid increases in home-heating costs.

According to a statement, Doyle commended the bi-partisan efforts to pass the proposal.

Over the last several weeks, my administration has been working closely with the Republican leadership to reach an agreement on this issue, and I'm pleased that, today, Democrats and Republicans have come together to deliver significant relief to working families who are being squeezed by their energy bills,\ Doyle said in a statement.
