Accusations abound over Abramoff ties, Wisconsin Dems and GOP say

Following Washington, D.C. lobbyist Jack Abramoff's sentencing to almost six years in prison, both of Wisconsin's political parties are pointing fingers at each other over which gubernatorial candidate has ties to the convicted lobbyist.

The Democratic Party of Wisconsin is calling for an explanation from U.S. Rep. Mark Green, R-Green Bay, on why his congressional office repeatedly accepted free tickets from Abramoff, according to a statement Wednesday.

One would think Mark Green would want to distance himself from the players in the GOP corruption scandal that has rocked

Washington, yet Green refuses to do so,\ said DPW chair Joe Wineke in a statement.

In another statement, the Republican Party of Wisconsin claimed Doyle had significant ties with Abramoff, linking the governor to tainted money.

""Jim Doyle is the only candidate for governor with direct ties to convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff,"" RPW Executive Director Rick Wiley said in a statement. ""It was Jim Doyle who had to return $1,000 from Team Abramoff member Alan Slomowitz.""
