Women’s soccer inks five new student-athletes; Duerst predicts ’great blend’

The UW women's soccer team inked five players for their squad for the 2006 season. This year's class of signees includes three midfielders, a forward and a goalkeeper.

'They have all competed in top-level club soccer, and I am excited about their athleticism,' head coach Dean Duerst said.

Midfielder Ashley Hedges led Carmel High School in Carmel, Ind. to three state championships. She was also named two-time all-state and all-district selection because of her great play. Hedges is also Carmel High Schools' all-time leader in assists.

The second of three midfielders signed was Krista Liskevych out of La Jolla Country Day High School in Encinitas, Calif. Liskevych led her team to conference championships in both 2005 and 2006. She also ranks in the top ten in goals scored and assists among San Diego high schools.

Rounding out the three midfielders signed in this year's class is Whitney Owusu out of Woodbury High School in Woodbury, Minn. Owusu was a 2005 selection to be a member of the Minnesota all-state team. She also helped her team get second place in the Minnesota state tournament.

The only forward in this year's class was Stephanie Krombach out of Appleton North High School in Appleton, Wisc. Krombach was a member of the all-state second team, and all-conference honorable mention. The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel also named her to their 'state's best' list.

Finishing off this year's list of commits is goalkeeper Wesley Johnson. As a member of St. Charles North High School in St. Charles, Ill., Johnson was named the 2004 Adidas Golden Glove award winner. She also helped the Elipse select club team win back-to-back national championships in 2004 and 2005.

'We have a great blend of personnel in this mix,' Duerst said Tuesday. 'They are all high-level players with great experience and backgrounds.'
