Kimia Lounge agreed to hold an underage event Feb. 22, the Associated Students of Madison announced Thursday at its spring semester opening press conference.
ASM said these efforts are a positive step toward providing monitored and organized weekend environments for 18- to 20-year-old students, one of its spring initiatives.
The ASM Special Forces Committee also said it hopes to book bands to play at Kimia Monday nights.
It also announced its spring 2006 goals for Academic Affairs, Special Forces, Legislative Affairs, the Diversity Committee, the Student Activity Center and Shared Governance.
The Special Forces Committee said it hopes to motivate five campus bars to purchase the Performing Arts Venue license approved in spring 2005 that will allow bars to hold underage events; it also wants to convince two bars to hold musical events for students aged 18 to 20.
Diversity Chair and UW-Madison freshman Molly Glasgow said one of her committee's main goals this semester is for five campus groups to participate in Student Shadow Day in April.
High school students of differing backgrounds, including minority students and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students, will visit the campus and experience UW-Madison with campus-group liaisons.
In light of a recent hate crime committed in University Housing residence halls, Glasgow said she will make a commitment to this program and other efforts, such as 'roommate conflict-intervention training,' to ensure students 'are respected for who [they] are.'
'Students' living environments should be comfortable, safe places that allow for maximum growth, but that is not always the case,' Glasgow said. 'There are likely to be conflicts, but these can be overcome in positive ways.'
ASM volunteer and UW-Madison junior Allison Solso announced that the Student Services Finance Committee secured $80,000 for Academic Affairs to use in implementing a textbook-rental program.
Participating professors will commit to using ASM's textbooks for a minimum of four semesters; ASM will implement the program in fall 2006.
