With their lone point coming from freshman Gian Hodgson at No. 6 singles, the University of Wisconsin men's tennis team (0-0 Big Ten, 3-1 overall) lost its first match of the spring season 6-1 Saturday afternoon to No. 5 Pepperdine in Malibu, Calif.
Hodgson remains undefeated in singles play after a three-set 7-6, 6-7, 11-9 victory against Denis Reinert and is now Wisconsin's only undefeated singles player at 4-0.
For the doubles, the Wisconsin duo of Nolan Polley and Felipe Bellido also moved to 4-0 after winning their second No. 3 match against Kevin Borzenski and Richard Johnson (8-7). Both of Wisconsin's top two doubles teams (No. 1, freshman Jeremy Sonkin and junior Lachezar Kasarov and freshmen Brennen and Hodgson) lost their first matches of the season and now stand 3-1.
Women's tennis
Stanford beat Texas 4-0 Sunday in the final at the 2006 USTA/ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championships at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
In the consolation bracket, The No. 7 Vanderbilt Commodores (0-0 SEC, 5-1) handled No. 52 Wisconsin (0-0 Big Ten) 1-4, 7-0, to conclude a 0-3 performance at the tournament by UW.
Moved to the five position just hours after Saturday night's contest with No. 3 Georgia Tech, freshman Elizabeth Carpenter pushed Vanderbilt's Caroline Ferrell to the limit, eventually losing 7-6 (3), 7-5.
