A UW-Madison alumnus ventured onto unstable ice on Lake Monona Friday morning while running from Madison police, according to a Madison Police Department statement.
The man eluded police on the lake and they searched for him to no avail, until he turned himself in approximately 5:30 p.m. Friday.
It began when police approached Justin Myers, 27, at 1:54 a.m. on King Street where Myers was reportedly throwing pieces of wood and cement from a balcony into the alley below, according to a statement.
The officer tried to apprehend Myers, but he would not cooperate and fled on foot across East Wilson Street and down John Nolen Drive to Lake Monona, the statement said.
Mike Hanson, public information officer for the Madison Police Department, said officers pursued Myers and witnessed him walk on the ice of Lake Monona.
'He was on the frozen part 100 yards from shore and he started heading towards open water and they were yelling to him,' Hanson said.
He said officers shone flashlights on Myers from shore until he was too far away.
At that point, according to the report, the police enlisted the Madison Fire Department and the Dane County Sheriff's department to aid in the search for Myers.
Hanson said he does not know if Myers was intoxicated at the time of the incident and said he is charged with disorderly conduct and resisting an officer.
