Gov. Jim Doyle declared a special legislative session Tuesday, urging the Legislature to address a $6 million dollar emergency energy package.
In a statement released Tuesday, Doyle said the Legislature must act on a bill that would help eligible Wisconsin families with soaring home heating costs.
'Working families in Wisconsin are getting squeezed by the high price of heating their homes, and it is time for the Legislature to take action,' Doyle said. 'Families who face heating bills that are 50 percent higher this year can't afford to wait any longer. I am asking the Legislature to do their jobs, so that working Wisconsin families can get some relief.'
Assembly Majority Leader Mike Huebsch, R-West Salem, and Senate Majority Leader Dale Schultz, R-Richland Center, said the Legislature would meet in a skeleton session in compliance with the governor's request but reconvene as a full body on Feb. 21 as originally scheduled.
'Last week Senate Republicans put forth our 'Kitchen Tables Priorities' agenda of which energy was a major component. Senator Rob Cowles, along with Senator Dave Zien, has been working diligently in a bipartisan fashion on this timely issue.' Schultz said in a statement Tuesday.
