Former state Senate Majority Leader Chuck Chvala, D-Madison, will officially start his nine-month jail sentence Monday for charges brought against him including extortion, misconduct in office and unlawful political contributions.
According to Dane County Sheriff Gary Hamblin, Chvala is scheduled to check into Dane County Jail Monday morning and go through compulsory booking procedures.
'Typically, when we have a number of people that are sentenced to report to jail ... they will all be booked in, which means they'll have the fingerprints taken, their photographs [taken] and complete all the paperwork and questionnaires that our staff requires,' Hamblin said.
During the initial sentencing, Dane County Circuit Court Judge David Flanagan granted Chvala with Huber law privileges'privileges Flanagan said are very typical.
'If a judge sentences somebody with Huber privileges, that means that they have the right to leave the jail during the day to go to work, go to school, go to medial appointments and look for a job,' Hamblin said.
Hamblin added Chvala may eventually participate in an electronic monitoring program.
'Most sentenced inmates are eligible for consideration, and a lot of it depends on people's behavior once they're in the jail system,' he said.
