Behind the Badger: UW Traditions

Nearly every weekend of the school year, UW-Madison students can be found rowdily cheering on the Badgers in everything from football to hockey.

Students flock to games donned in crazy concoctions of red and white, rooting their teams to hopeful victory.

The continuing tradition of student spirit at UW-Madison sporting events is something that sticks with graduates long after they leave the bright stadium lights of Camp Randall behind them.

Todd and Amy Argall have lived in Madison for nearly 10 years. Throughout those years, the Wisconsin Badgers have played a huge role in their family's life.

'When we moved here Amy was a student,' Todd Argall said. 'I would get an extra ticket and we would sit on the edge of the student section and watch all the games.'

Argall said they have brought their eldest son Andrew to the games since he was very young.

'I would hold him and he would watch Bucky Badger the whole time and watch the activity in the student section,' he said.

The Argalls have since left the student section and are now regular season ticket holders.

Andrew Argall is now 11 years old, and still goes to the games with his dad.

He said it is something fun to do with his family.

'I like talking about the game with my dad and listening to the band,' Andrew said.

Andrew may be a little young to be a Badger, but there are countless UW-Madison students who enjoy sharing the tradition of celebrating Badger sporting events with their families.

UW-Madison junior Natalie Herb is a season ticket holder for both football and hockey. Herb's mother joins her for the majority of these football games, and a few hockey games every year.

'It's fun to see my mom more than I normally would, since I don't go home a lot,' she said. 'It's always fun to celebrate and party with your mom.'

Herb said she plans on making Badger games a staple for her family when she is an alumna.

'It would have been fun if I had done it when I was little,' she said. 'It's fun to be brought up around college sports; my kids will be.'

Andrew Argall is still a ways off from being a college student, let alone a college alumnus, however he knows he wants Badger games to always be a part of his life no matter where he lives.

'I just always know I'm going to get a good game,' he said.
