A UW-Madison student fell into the Mississippi river near La Crosse, Wis. Jan. 8 after an evening of drinking and was able to pull himself to safety and walk to a nearby hospital, according to the La Crosse Tribune.
The man had an estimated BAC of 0.163 at 1:30 a.m., the approximate time he last remembers being at a downtown La Crosse bar. The 21 year old reportedly remembers little of the events from 1:45 a.m. to 7 a.m., when he walked into Gunderson Lutheran Medical Center.
He said he remembers coming to in a strong current and was able to pull himself out onto shore.
The incident highlights a disturbing trend of young La Crosse men falling into the river while intoxicated. There have been seven deaths in as many years by drowning in this manner, according to the Tribune's report.
