Greg Stiemsma, a sophomore center for the UW-Madison men's basketball team, has been ruled academically ineligible to play second semester, according to a statement from uwbadgers.com.
'I've been dealing with depression, which caused me to take a leave of absence from the team and also affected my academic performance,' Stiemsma said. 'That has resulted in me being academically ineligible this semester.'
Stiemsma sat out the last two games, citing an 'undisclosed medical condition,' and he said Wednesday he has worked to treat his depression.
Stiemsma, statistically the third-best shot blocker in the Big Ten, cannot compete or travel with the Badgers but can continue to practice with the team at home, the statement said.
He played in 16 games since November, averaging 1.5 blocked shots per game.
Stiemsma attended Randolph High School in Randolph, Wis.
