Gilman Street mugging the latest in a rash of petty incidents near State Street

In another example of minor crime near the UW-Madison campus, a 22-year-old female student was robbed Friday night as she walked with friends on the 200 block of West Gilman Street.

According to police, two suspects stole the woman's purse at approximately 10:48 p.m., and then fled on foot. Both suspects are described as Hispanic males in their early 20s with stocky builds.

Meghan Hanes, a UW-Madison junior who lives one block away from where the robbery took place, said recent crime has altered her sense of security.

'I'm more conscious of going out at night, going out alone or even carrying a purse with me,' Hanes said.

Hanes also said the dark sidewalks branching off State Street no longer feel safe.

'There was one night I walked back late by myself, but instead of walking down the sidewalk, I walked down the middle of the street,' she said.

The woman robbed Friday night was not injured, according to police. Anyone with information about the case, or similar cases, is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at 266-6014.
