The No. 4 Women's hockey team (14-2-0 overall, 11-1-0 WCHA) defeated the Bemidji State Beavers (3-11-2 overall, 2-10-0 WCHA) 4-1 in Roseau, Minn., completing its sixth sweep of the season.
The Badgers were spurred on by redshirt freshman Jessie Vetter's 26 saves in her collegiate starting debut.
UW was shut out by BSU until freshman forward Angie Keseley took advantage of a chaotic stint in front of BSU goalie Emily Brookshaw. Keseley knocked the puck in with less than seven minutes remaining in the first period.
Unfazed by the Badger score, BSU stormed back and evened the game with a goal less than one minute later.
Senior forward Nikki Burish fired right back, though, when she netted her fourth goal of the season just two minutes after the BSU score and put UW up one after the first period.
The Beavers out shot the Badgers 14-7 in the second period, but it was a BSU penalty at the end of the period that proved costly. The hooking call set up a power play for the Badgers, and 38 seconds into the final period the Badgers took full advantage. Senior captain Sharon Cole knocked in her goal, with junior forward Meghan Michelson and junior forward Bobbi-Jo Sugar being credited with the assist. Freshman forward Erika Lawler also added her fifth goal for the Badgers.
UW out-shot the Beavers 34-27, while Brookshaw made 30 saves.
The Badgers continue play on the road when they take on No. 2 Minnesota Duluth next weekend. The Badgers and Bulldogs split their first series at on the weekend of Oct. 8-9 at the Kohl Center. The Badgers lost the first game 5-2, but came back to win the second 4-3 in overtime.
