Same-sex marriage ban passes through Senate committee

The amendment that would ban same-sex marriage and civil union in Wisconsin passed through a Senate committee Monday.

The Senate Judiciary, Corrections and Privacy Committee passed the amendment with a party-line vote, and the state Senate is expected to vote on it today.

The legislation passed with a comfortable margin last year, and groups both for and against it anticipate its passage again this year.

If the Senate passes the amendment today, it would mark the second consecutive year of legislative approval, making the amendment one step closer to being placed on the ballots for voter consideration in November.

The proposed amendment was the subject of a crowded and, at times, heated debate last week.
