Instituting competitive salaries for employees and expanding access to schools within the UW System by altering financial aid and tuition were two topics of Friday's UW System Board of Regents meeting, according to a UW System statement.
Peter McGrath, president of the National Association of State Land Grant Universities and Colleges, an expert who spoke on the competitive hiring issue, said the system needs to consider itself a business.
'I think we have to talk about higher education as a business, a special business. I'll call it the brain business,' McGrath said.
The regents stressed their commitment to examining a new tuition or financial aid plan that could increase access to the system schools for prospective students from low-income backgrounds.
David Wilson was officially appointed the first chancellor of UW Extension and the UW Colleges.
UW-Madison served as the official host of the December meeting, with the school giving presentations to the board on Thursday and Friday.
The board passed a unanimous resolution to cancel the meeting scheduled for January and reconvene in February.
