Rescuers pull man from frigid Monona Bay

At approximately 8:00 a.m. Monday morning, a man fell through the ice covering Monona Bay on the city's south side, according to the City of Madison Fire Department.

The man was reportedly taking a shortcut to work when he fell through the ice about 200 yards from the shoreline. Several people fishing in the area saw the man fall through the ice and called for help, according to a fire department statement.

The City of Madison Lake Rescue team arrived at approximately 8:04 a.m. and rescuers were able to pull the man to safety by approximately 8:12 a.m. The ice on the bay continued to break as rescuers pulled the man out of the water with a rope.
