More than 1,000 demonstrators flooded the state Capitol Tuesday to voice dissent for a bill that would mandate official documented evidence of citizenship or legal residence in order to obtain a state issued driver's license.
The proposed bill received strong opposition from an overwhelming majority of young Latino protestors. Many held signs and chanted words of fierce disagreement.
A number of different groups were represented at the rally, including the Coalition for Safe Roads, a hybrid organization combining youth, immigrants, business, unions and community and religious leaders.
State Rep. Mark Pettis, R-Hertel, the author of the bill, said his proposal is in compliance with the 9/11 Commission and within appropriate standards for the federal government's identification bill.
AB 69 already passed through the state Assembly and is on schedule for the Senate Committee on Natural Resources and Transportation hearing set for Thursday.
