Mind your morsels with the UW dietetic and nutrition club

Q: With projects due and finals around the corner, I was wondering if all these caffeinated beverages are really safe to drink, and if so how much?

A: According to the National Institutes of Health, a diet with moderate amounts of caffeine (three cups of coffee or less) is safe. Excess caffeine intake can lead to increased heart rate, excessive urination, anxiety, nausea and vomiting. Also, caffeine in the diet can be addictive, so it is important to not over consume. Abrupt withdrawal of caffeine may cause headaches, drowsiness and irritability, so reduce caffeine intake gradually. Here is a breakdown of how much caffeine is in drinks: coffee has 85 milligrams, energy drinks have 80 milligrams, tea has 40 milligrams and sodas have 25 milligrams.
