I consider myself somewhat 'old school' when it comes to sports. I believe the Four Horsemen offense should not be illegal. I believe the designated hitter is a crime against society. I believe in the three-pointer, but I think making three points the old-fashioned way (a bucket and a foul) is 100 times better. I believe there is nothing wrong with a baseball game that has only three hits and one run scored, especially if it's a game-winning sac-fly. Football should be played with eight men in the box at all times, and every hockey game should leave fans wondering if they mistakenly saw a boxing match.
But maybe that's just me.
Lately the sports world is abuzz with the talk of the Indianapolis Colts. They're 11-0 so far this season and head coach Tony Dungy, according to ESPN, is facing the dilemma of whether or not he should sit his starters like Peyton Manning, Edgerrin James and Marvin Harrison.
Am I the only one who thinks this is ridiculous?
These are grown men. They have lived on football, some of them, for the last 15 years. Injuries are part of the game. As Herm Edwards, head coach of the New York Football Jets once said, 'You play to win the game.'
Is it just me, or do the Colts just need to ball up? Last time I checked, football was not a game of streaking out to a great start and calling 11 wins 'good enough.' Walter Payton, the best running back to ever play the game, played 12 straight seasons and missed only one game. This is the foundation of football. This is why fans look up to players. They see these monuments made of mere flesh and blood and worship them because they achieve things that no other can.
I realize the Super Bowl is the ultimate goal'??I really do. I also know the relationship Marvin Harrison and Peyton Manning have, trust me. I see it before every freaking Colts game. They do their warm-ups. They don't talk. They're one with the Force. I get it. But you can't tell me taking five weeks off doesn't hurt players'even the strongest of Jedi.
Maybe I'm just frustrated this junk is the top NFL story on ESPN.com and that the only baseball news is that Kyle Farnsworth may or may not be going to the Yankees to flush his career further down the tubes.
I'll sign off with this: The Badger men's hockey team is 11-1-2. They're on a 12-game unbeaten streak and are ranked No. 1 in the nation after sweeping the College Hockey Showcase Tournament last weekend. They play Minnesota this weekend on FSN. It's a huge series. Watch.
