Pollard swipes Malchow from Badger Athletic Dept.

Former UW deputy athletics director and current Iowa State athletic director Jaime Pollard announced that Steve Malchow, a senior-level athletics administrator with the Badgers since 1990, has accepted a position to join the Cyclones athletics department staff.

'This is a great day for Iowa State athletics,' Pollard said. 'Bringing Steve Malchow to ISU was one of my first priorities. To get him here from Wisconsin is a real coup for our program.'

Malchow, who graduated from the University of Iowa in 1984, will work with Pollard in overseeing the Cyclones' 18-sport NCAA Division I athletics program.

'[Pollard] isn't bringing in four or five people, he's bringing one,' Tom Kroschell, the associate athletics director for media relations at ISU told the Daily Cardinal Tuesday. 'It's a position we don't have here in that it concentrates more on focusing on specific important groups for the athletics department and reaching them in what ever way, as opposed to just dealing with media.'

According to Kroschell, acquiring Malchow was a top priority for the University.

'To be honest, last week I was worried that he wasn't coming,' Kroschell said. 'And when he said he was coming, that was a relief to me. I think he, far and away, was the best person for the job. It was much better than other scenario.'

Malchow received the 2000 Scoop Hudgins Award, given annually to the nation's top sports information director. He coordinated Ron Dayne's Heisman Trophy-winning campaign in 1999 and handled media relations for all eight bowl teams.

'It's certainly an honor for me to join the experienced and talented senior leadership already in place at Iowa State,' Malchow said. 'I'm very appreciative of the opportunity that Jamie Pollard has given to me.
