The charitable branch of the 3M corporation, 3M Community Giving, announced Nov. 14 a $1.6 million grant to the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Building Project that includes $1.4 million in cash and $200,000 in 3M multimedia projectors, according to a university statement.
'This generous gift to the College of Engineering reflects 3M's commitment to innovation,' said College of Engineering Dean Paul Peercy. 'The new Mechanical Engineering building will have the facilities and resources to conduct research and educate engineers in a new age of discovery.'
The money will be committed to full renovation of the building, including an updated electrical system, new central heating and air conditioning and new elevators.
Its main lecture hall, the 3M Auditorium, will be a 3,045-square-foot lecture hall with 149 seats, and will be capable of initiating and receiving satellite video transmissions.
