The property at 417 Mifflin St. caught fire early Sunday morning and the blaze caused $50,000 in damage, according to a Madison Fire Department report.
The fire's cause is under investigation, and a resident of the house refused to comment. The report noted people were inside the house when the blaze started, but everyone evacuated without injury.
Neighbor Joe Goldfine, a UW-Madison graduate student who lives at 413 W. Mifflin St., was home during the fire and estimated 10 people were in the house.
'It seemed like there was a party going on,' he said.
According to the report, the fire was called in at 12:54 a.m. and the fire crew had the blaze under control by 1:06 a.m.
'They went upstairs and smashed all the windows and started extinguishing the fire,' Goldfine said.
The fire originated in a second-floor bedroom and caused smoke damage to the second and third floors, as well as water damage to the first floor.
'There weren't any flames jutting out of the windows,' Goldfine said, 'but there was a lot of smoke coming out of the house.'
According to the report, all eight residents will stay with friends.
