Med Flight service celebrates 20 years in Madison's skies

Med Flight, the emergency response helicopter service, had its 20th anniversary Saturday.

The helicopter service transports crash and disaster victims between UW-Madison hospitals.

Med Flight Medical Director Bruce Lindsay said Saturday the helicopter's new landing pad, located on a hospital roof instead of the middle of the Emergency Room parking lot, which sees heavy, urgent traffic, has been a recent step toward improving the Med Flight program.

\We make it safer for our patient population, for EMS folks coming in and out of current E.R., but we also make things safer for air medical not landing right next to the building, landing up on the roof,"" Lindsay told NBC 15.

Saturday, Med Flight supporters gathered at Morey Fields in Middleton for a 20th anniversary event, which included a Madison-based aerial performance group called Cycropia as well as an appearance by the Med Flight helicopter.

Proceeds from the $500 ticket price for the gala will benefit the UW Hospital's new emergency department, currently being remodeled.
