Cardinal View: Anti-war referendum will raise awareness

A backbone of democracy is the ability of citizens to call their government to action through public discourse. Vigorous public discourse tests and strengthens beliefs, widens local debate, strengthens voters' voice and can provide support for congressional action. The recent effort across the state, including in Madison, to place referenda regarding the war in Iraq on the April ballot is an example of desperately needed public discourse on Iraq.

The referendum would give voters the chance to vote yes or no to the following question: 'Should the United States bring all military personnel home from Iraq now'?

It is certain those pushing for this referendum in Madison would like to withdraw troops from Iraq. But regardless of your opinion on the war in Iraq, students should support placing this referendum on the April ballot because it lets citizens provide input to decision-makers and propels debate on an issue of vital importance. As of last Thursday, 11,000 of the needed 16,000 signatures to place the referendum had been collected'students could easily contribute the remaining 5,000 signatures.

While we support this referendum, the liberal groups behind its placement on the ballot have their priorities misplaced. Their idealism should be commended, but a Madison vote to pull troops out of Iraq will have little impact on major decision-makers in the State Department, Defense Department and Senate Committee on Foreign Relations. The 2006 congressional elections offer anti-war liberals a better chance to have their message resonate. To achieve their goal, their energy should be mobilized in support of next year's anti-war candidates for Congress, who can be more influential than any city vote.

Nonetheless, as their efforts are already well in motion, only benefits can come from a widening discussion of Iraq on the local level.
