A possible restructuring of Associated Students of Madison could lower student segregated fees by establishing a separate non-profit agency, a proposal that will come to a vote by Student Council Wednesday.
According to ASM Chair Eric Varney, the vote would change ASM bylaws and thus allow the organization to establish a non-profit organization called the ASM Foundation, which would have a fund-raising capability.
\We've talked to most of the people on council and we've gotten a lot of positive feedback,"" ASM member Stephanie Biese said.
Two ASM members, Campus Organizer Jen Weaver and Program Organizer Anjali Bhasin, would comprise the foundation.
One potential problem the proposed foundation could face is supplying benefits to these two employees that are comparable to those they enjoyed as UW-Madison employees.
""We would still be able to give them those benefits through the fund-raised money,"" Biese said. University employee perks, such as SERF memberships and ASM bus passes, could potentially be lost.
The ASM Foundation could be established Jan. 1, 2006 and would raise funds from ASM alumni and UW-Madison graduates.
