Among controversial bills addressed Tuesday, the state Senate passed Senate Bill 138, which demands medical care providers give women specific information regarding the pain fetuses experience after 20 weeks in gestation.
Another bill passed was Assembly Bill 286, which demands abstinence receives more attention during sex education. Assembly Bill 499, which sought to limit human cloning and related practices, was voted down.
The Senate deferred voting on Assembly Bill 207, which aimed to allow people to opt out of certain tasks under an anti-discrimination policy.
If passed, the bill allows hospitals, pharmacists and teachers to refrain from actions such as performing abortions, dispensing birth control or discussing birth control during sex education instruction.
