Letters to the Editor

This year, the Athletic Department has continued its depressing trend of finding new ways to regulate the handout of student hockey tickets. Over the past few years it has added group size restrictions, group registration, and last year, made the long wait for hockey tickets a test of stamina by eliminating the use of blankets, sleeping bags and other minor comforts.

Still, the hockey line endured and continued its reputation as the most courteous group on campus. This year, the powers that be have reached deep into their new bag of tricks to add a new restriction. According to the posted rules online, \the Athletic Ticket Office will announce at a later date when groups will be allowed to form, as well as the date of ticket distribution."" In essence, no one can camp out until the Athletic Department sends an e-mail to all the students announcing the turn-in date. Theoretically, they could announce it the day before, and launch a mad scramble to collect groups to go to the Kohl Center to register.

With the new system, it is little better than having a random lottery. No longer is it a true first-come, first-serve system. Now it is the luck of checking your e-mail at the right time, and being able to get in touch with three other people as fast as possible. This does not create a good student section. It creates animosity and punishes the fans most interested in being the core of a great student section.

I hope the Athletic Department isn't depriving the current student class of both a memorable experience, and one of the greatest student sections in collegiate athletics.
