More than one dozen dignitaries, both civilian and military, honored the Madison-based 115th Fighter Wing of the Wisconsin Air National Guard Monday.
The ceremony, held at Truax Field, presented the wing with Global War on Terror medals. About 400 members of the 115th earned the expeditionary version of the Global War on Terror Medal for participating in operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. More than 900 varieties of the service version of the medal were given to members who stayed in the United States and participated in Operation Noble Eagle, the combat air patrols flown to protect U.S. cities since Sept. 11, 2001.
Speakers at the event included U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin, D-Madison, Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk, Madison Mayor Dave Cieslewicz and state Sen. Mark Miller, D-Monona, who himself spent 30 years as a member of the 115th Fighter Wing.??
Attorney General Alberto Gonzales will propose some \technical modifications"" to the controversial USA Patriot Act in an effort to address the concerns of critics and ensure that the anti-terrorism legislation is renewed by Congress later this year, according to a Justice Department official.
In an appearance Tuesday before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Gonzales supported changes in the law concerning secret warrants for financial documents, library data and other business records, according to the Justice official. The changes would clearly limit the use of such warrants to national security investigations and would allow targets to mount legal challenges to the search, the official said.
The proposal marks a significant shift for the Justice Department, which under Attorney General John Ashcroft had refused to entertain proposed changes to the legislation. It also marks an acknowledgment of the growing clout of critics of the law, who come from both the political left and right.
After five years of development, UW System and campus officials have introduced a new interactive website known as ""Wisconsin Jobs for Wisconsin Grads.""
The site requires registration at www.myconsortium.com/Wisconsin/employer and according to UW-Madison officials is a promising addition to the job search work already done on campus.
The online job posting system connects Wisconsin employers with college seniors looking for jobs. Registered employers can post jobs and internships. Students can then e-mail r??sum??s and completed job applications.
