Shortly after returning from his trade delegation to Mexico, Gov. Jim Doyle followed through on his promise to veto the property tax-freeze bill passed by the Republican-controlled Legislature three weeks ago.
A statement from Senate Majority Leader Dale Schultz, R-Richland Center, and Assembly Speaker John Gard, R-Peshtigo, said the Republican leaders withheld passing the bill onto Doyle's desk to give him more time to contemplate \the impact such a veto would have on taxpaying families.""
In his veto message, Doyle said the proposal was ""irresponsible"" because it did not include aid to public schools and put in peril local governments' emergency services.
