Regents committee recommends next UW-Milwaukee chancellor

UW System President Katharine Lyall and the Board of Regents Special Committee for the UWM Chancellor Search announced Monday their recommendation to hire Carlos Santiago, the University of Albany's current provost and vice president for academic affairs, as the next chancellor of UW-Milwaukee.

\Dr. Santiago is the perfect choice to lead Wisconsin's public urban research university,"" Lyall said in a press release. ""He has proven experience in leading a large research university in an urban setting within a major public university system.""

The entire Board of Regents will vote Friday on the decision to recommend Santiago over three other finalists. If they approve, Santiago will begin as chancellor in July 2004, according to UW System Spokesperson Erik Christianson.

""If and when the board acts on Friday, he will be hired,"" Christianson said.

Santiago said in a press release he looks forward to working at UW-Milwaukee and has experience dealing with financial troubles from his tenure at a New York state university, which has recently seen fiscal strains like those plaguing the UW System.

Despite recent concerns that the UW System may not be able to attract top officials because of budget cuts and one analyst's declaration that the UW System has had to rely on its reputation, Christianson said the search committee did not have to sacrifice quality applicants.

""This was a very competitive pool of finalists,"" he said.

Though Christianson could offer no details about Santiago's potential salary, he said such information would be available in the future.
