State Rep. Jeff Stone, R-Greendale, said Monday the UW System Board of Regents should establish ethical rules prohibiting system employees from receiving compensation from businesses that work for the system.

Stone said if the regents do not act, he will introduce legislation concerning the issue. His announcement follows recent news reports highlighting System President Katharine Lyall's position on the board of directors of Alliant Energy Corp. She received $50,000 in cash and stock options from Alliant last year, according to The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. Alliant will earn nearly $6 million as project manager for the new cogeneration power plant on the west side of campus, the paper reported.

\Obviously the governor and legislators have an interest in public/private partnerships that would benefit corporations in our state. However, we would never allow them to be paid to sit on the boards of companies which the state has contracts with. Why would we have a different answer for those who administer our $3.5 billion university system?"" Stone said.

The Student Services Finance Committee approved a $108,886 budget for the Jewish Community Center Monday. The JCC requested $110,569.80 and only salaries for members who pass out fliers were cut.

The committee also tabled the budget for the Multicultural Student Coalition, which requested $673,984.69. The SSFC has already cut $170,850.88 from the budget, but the cuts need to formally pass Wednesday.

Additionally, the budget for Polygon, an organization for students in the College of Engineering, was also tabled until Wednesday because SSFC members said they need more information about the budget.

Also on Wednesday, budgets for the Student Judiciary and the SSFC are scheduled for hearings.
