Staff Opinion

The Wisconsin Legislature, in a benevolent effort to protect the state's crime-beleaguered citizenry from another Sept. 11-style attack, is planning to vote on a bill that would allow handguns to be concealed in public, an activity which has been banned for 130 years in our state.

The bill does not go nearly far enough to allow concealing weapons.

Let the public conceal its handguns! Conceal them to the fullest extent possible! Keep them hidden under layers and layers of clothing, never to see the light of day!

Think of the crimes an extensive concealed-handgun bill would prevent: Last June, a UW-Madison student allegedly murdered three victims who were involved with him in an offshore gambling ring. The shooter found the gun in the victims' car. Conceal guns even more and the problem vanishes.

Think of our ghettoed, impoverished streets, so full of shady criminals and sinister villains. They ought to be patrolled by those that know the law best: the average citizen. Each gun-toting individual will be able to choose to become a self-appointed vigilante, a bounty hunter or a cowboy, whenever he or she feels the least bit threatened.

Think of our schools, so ridden with violence and delinquents. Never fear! Page two of Assembly Bill 444 says, \Specifically, the bill authorizes a licensee to carry a handgun in a school zone if: 1) the licensee is in a motor vehicle ... or bicycle; 2) the licensee has exited from a motor vehicle and is encasing the handgun or storing it ...""

Besides, the bill would allow those as young as 21 to apply for the $75 permit. Think of how much fun those birthday parties would be: booze, followed by a nice, friendly round of Russian roulette. Concealed, of course.
