Gov. Jim Doyle chose the new state quarter design featuring a cow's head, a chunk of cheese and an ear of corn Tuesday, the Associated Press reported.
Forty percent of respondents voting online chose the cow design instead of one depicting an explorer and an American Indian. Doyle sided with the voters instead of a commission appointed by former Gov. Scott McCallum.
\Ultimately, it's Wisconsin's quarter, and he wanted the public to have final say,"" Doyle spokesperson Dan Leistikow said.
Thirty-two percent of the Internet voters chose the quarter with the exploration motif. A third quarter depicting a deer in a field won 28 percent of the vote.
The U.S. mint will probably begin circulating the new quarter in October 2004.
The State Appeals Court ruled Thursday that a group of clinics owned by the UW Medical Foundation are not exempt from paying nearly $1 million in property taxes.
The foundation bought the clinics in the early 1990s for $8 million from Physicians Plus. The court said the clinics were not procured for charitable purposes.
UW Medical Foundation officials would not say Friday whether they would appeal the decision made by the 4th District Court of Appeals. If the foundation would appeal, the case would go to the Wisconsin Supreme Court.
City of Madison officials said they hoped the foundation would not appeal the case, due to the tax break it would give Madison taxpayers.
