Inspectors from the United States Department of Agriculture have been visiting campus laboratories that house biological agents all month, The Capital Times reported Thursday.

R. Timothy Mulcahy, the associate vice chancellor for research policy, said the inspectors are currently touring labs around the country looking for agents such as anthrax and botulinum toxin.

Mulcahy said many of the site visits are kept secret and he would not disclose what dangerous agents are stored at UW-Madison.

\We have implemented an aggressive program to enhance our biosecurity,"" Mulcahy said. ""We've always had a very active bio-safety program.""

He added that the inspectors will visit fewer than a dozen labs and he would not confirm whether they would check the medical school.

However, he did say the inspections exclude the College of Engineering, which is the home to the nuclear physics program.

The Associated Students of Madison endorsed two initiatives Thursday to instate a $7.75 minimum wage in Madison.

ASM member Phil Ejercito said the group supports an effort by local activists and politicians as well as a similar ordinance Mayor Dave Cieslewicz introduced Tuesday.

Cieslewicz's ordinance must pass city committees and the city council. The Campaign must gain about 13,000 signatures to make it onto a ballot referendum in April.
