Volleyball
The No. 24 Wisconsin women's volleyball team lost a heartbreaker Friday in the Georgia Tech Invitational to No. 5 Georgia Tech (24-30, 31-33, 30-26, 30-27, 15-10). Wisconsin took a 2-0 lead in the match, but Georgia Tech (11-0) won the final three games. In the match, the Badgers hit a UW five-game record .340 percent.
Five Badgers had 10 or more kills for Coach Pete Waite's team. Overall, UW had 87 kills to Georgia Tech's 81. Sophomore middle blocker Sheila Shaw recorded a career-high 24 kills and freshman middle blocker Amy Bladow added a career-high 14. Junior outside hitter Marian Weidner, sophomore outside hitter Aubrey Meierotto and junior outside hitter Jill Odenthal added 19, 14 and 13 kills, respectively.
UW played two matches in Georgia on Saturday. The women swept South Florida (30-27, 30-27, 30-26) and Western Carolina (30-15, 30-17, 30-22).
In the South Florida match, three Badgers had 10 or more kills. Odenthal and Weidner led with 13 each, while Meierotto had 11. Senior Morgan Shields added nine digs and 40 assists.
Against Western Carolina, the Badgers blocked the Catamounts a season-high 11 times. Senior Lisa Zukowski started at outside hitter instead of her usual libero position and contributed a match high 11 kills. Zukowski and Meierotto were the two Badgers picked for the all-tournament team.
Women's Soccer
The UW women's soccer team (5-3-1 overall, 1-1 Big Ten) experienced an up-and-down start to conference play this past weekend as they hosted two games at the McClimon Complex. The lady Badgers shut out Indiana 2-0 in the Big Ten opener Friday night only to lose 1-0 Sunday to Purdue.
Senior midfielder Jenny Kundert returned from injury Friday night and played a major role in the UW victory. The Madison native scored a first-half goal in stellar fashion as she weaved her way around the IU defense to put one in the left side of the goal. Head Coach Dean Duerst's squad tallied its second goal of the game when freshman midfielder Kara Kabellis cashed in on her third goal of the year with a penalty kick in the 75th minute.
Sunday was a much different story as UW was unable to kick one past Purdue goalkeeper Lauren Mason. UW seemingly had the upper hand throughout the match with a 14-7 edge in shots and a 12-3 advantage in corner kicks, but was unable to sneak a goal by the strong Purdue defense.
Although the final score was in favor of the visitors on Sunday, Badger fans still saw a solid weekend of play from the team.
Men's Soccer
While the UW women played in Madison, the men (4-4) traveled to Dayton, Ohio to take part in the Dayton Marriott Flyer Classic. Head Coach Jeff Rohrman's group kicked-off with an impressive 5-0 whipping of Indiana University-Purdue University- Indianapolis Friday.
Wisconsin was led on offense by a solid trio of forwards, juniors Jed Hohlbein and Nick Van Sicklen and freshman Reid Johnson. Hohlbein tallied his team leading fifth and sixth goals of the season, while Van Sicklen scored his third and fourth of the year. Johnson, a Wisconsin native notched his first goal of the season when he scored in the 89th minute.
Men's Golf
The Wisconsin's men's golf team pulled out a seventh place finish at the Northern Intercollegiate Sunday behind junior Kevin Tassistro and his final round score of a one-under-par 70.
The Badgers collectively shot a 296 third round and managed to move up two spots in the last round of the 15 team tournament to finish seventh at 302-290-296-888. Tassistro shot a total of 221 and moved into a tie for 22nd place. The Badgers were led individually by junior Brian Brodell, whose score of 73-68-74-215 was good enough to earn a tie for 10th place.
The tournament was held at the University of Michigan Golf Course, the site of this years Big Ten Championship. Xavier claimed first-place in the team competition with a score of 288-285-280-853.
Women's Golf
The Wisconsin women's golf team finished a strong fifth on Sunday at the Mary Fossum Invitational in East Lansing, Mich. Behind senior Malinda Johnson who tied for fifth place individually, the Badgers shot a 320-306-314-940 in the 16 team tournament.
Johnson shot a two-over-par 74 in the third round to finish at 226, tied with two other golfers for fifth place. Sophomore Jackie Obermueller tied for 18th place with a third round score of 75 and a 233 for the tournament. Freshman Nikki Morse shot a 77-81-82-240 to tie for 41st place.
Host Michigan State took first-place in the 54-hole tournament, shooting a 300 final round to post a team total of 901''??
