A look at the Big Ten this weekend

Ohio State 24, Bowling Green 17

Ohio State pulled out another close game as they extended their NCAA leading winning streak to 18 games. It took an OSU interception on the last play of the game to seal the victory for the Buckeyes.

Ohio State nearly had two 100 yard rushers as junior running backs Maurice Hall eclipsed the 100 yard mark (19 rushes, 107 yards) and Lydell Ross just missed the mark as he ran for 94 yards including two touchdowns. Senior quarterback Scott McMullen filled in for the injured senior quarterback Craig Krenzel and had a decent 10 for 18 performance with 118 yards and a touchdown.

Oregon 31, Michigan 27

In one of the bigger surprises of the weekend, Oregon pounded Michigan in the early going and hung on for a four point victory. Michigan's Heisman Trophy hopeful senior running back Chris Perry, the leading rusher in the nation entering the game, was held to only 26 yards.

Sophomore Kellen Clemens and senior Jason Fife split time at quarterback for the Ducks. Combined, Clemens and Fife threw for 253 yards. However, it was the Oregon special teams that made the difference in this game. In the first quarter the Ducks blocked a kick and returned it 78 yards for a score. Later in the game, senior corner back Steven Moore returned a punt 61 yards to put Oregon up 21-6

Iowa 21, Arizona State 2

Iowa looked as strong as any team in the Big Ten this past weekend as they romped then Top 25 Arizona State. The Hawkeye defense was stifling as it did not allow the Sun Devil offense to score a single point. ASU was only able to manage 24 yards on the ground.

Senior quarterback Nathan Chandler had a part in all three scores as he finished the day with 154 yards and three touchdowns. Senior running Back Fred Russel also piled up the yards as well as he rushed for 154 yards of his own.

Minnesota 48, La-Lafayette 14

The Golden Gophers won their 600th school victory in convincing fashion over an undermatched team. Minnesota's running attack proved too much for La-Lafayette. Freshman Laurence Maroney and sophomore Marion Barber III each added 100-yard days to their career stats. Barder tied a school record by rushing for four touchdowns.

Michigan State 22, Notre Dame 16

Michigan State used the big play to knock off the Irish in South Bend, Ind. this weekend. The Spartans scored once on a 71 yard Jaren Hayes run, as well as a 40 yard interception return. Hayes finished the day with 111 yards rushing.

Notre Dame senior quarterback Carlyle Holiday was replaced in the second half after a dismal performance. Holiday finished the day with only 102 yards passing, and threw three interceptions. His replacement did not fare much better as Brady Quinn completed only six of his 17 passes.

California 31, Illinois 24

Senior quarterback Jon Beutjer threw the ball 57 times for the Illini, but his effort was not enough as the Golden Bears were able to hang on to win by a touchdown. Beutjer finished the day with 427 yards passing to go along with his three touchdown passes.

Illinois fell short of a great comeback as the Illini trailed 31-14 with less than eight minutes remaining in the game. After kicking a field goal with less than two minutes to go, cutting the lead to seven, Illinois recovered an onside kick, but ran out of time.

Penn State 32, Kent State 10

Penn State fell behind 10-0 initially, but quickly rebounded and never looked back. Freshman Austin Scott rushed the ball 21 times for 100 yards and three touchdowns. Penn State nearly tripled Kent State in total yards (410-184).

Purdue 59, Arizona 7

Purdue matched its all-time high in points scored under Head Coach Joe Tiller this weekend. The Boilermakers jumped out to a 38-0 lead before Arizona was able to put any points on the board.

Junior quarterback Kyle Orton threw for 261 yards and three touchdowns to lead Purdue. He was helped in large part by freshman running back Jerome Brooks who rushed for 122 yards and two touchdowns. Sophomore Running back Jerod Void added two touchdown runs of his own.

Northwestern 28, Duke 10

In a game dubbed the \Brain Bowl"" Northwestern jumped out to an early 14 point lead and never looked back.

Northwestern's offensive line dominated Duke and allowed the Wildcats to rush for 281 yards on the ground. Senior running back Jason Wright led the Northwestern ground attack as he racked up 149 yards rushing including two touchdowns.

Kentucky 34, Indiana 17

Kentucky senior quarterback Jared Lorenzen had a big day for the Wildcats as he threw two touchdowns and rushed for another. Kentucky used a balanced running attack as they had four rushers that had at least 30 yards rushing.

Indiana's Brian Lewis rushed for 114 yards in the loss and quarterback Matt LoVecchio threw for 240 yards, including a touchdown and an interception in the loss.
