The Dane County coroner ruled the death an accident, but the coroner's office and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are still investigating the incident.

The land now home to UW-Madison has likely been visited and inhabited by humans since the end of the last ice age, according to Daniel Einstein, the university's environmental management coordinator.

Einstein said there are at least 22 archeological sites on campus and in the UW Arboretum, which include cemeteries and ancient camps. The area around Picnic Point alone is home to five of these sites. No other university in the world can claim the number of effigy mounds and earthworks found here.

Einstein is directing a project to survey the university's archeological heritage and develop signs and an interpretive map based on their findings.
