WiscMail users experiencing problems with their accounts in the past few days will likely have to wait until Wednesday evening before their accounts will be active again, according to Brian Rust, communications director at the Division of Information Technology.
\There was a server outage over the weekend and it was a hardware failure that was fixed and during the time that the hardware was down, database files were corrupted,"" Rust said.
The corruption of files forced DoIT to undergo a long process to restore the approximately 32,000 accounts affected.
""It's just one of three mail [storage] machines that were affected by this, so there are another 25,000 accounts that are unaffected, but it just so happens that [this is] the particular machine that has the greatest number of accounts on it,"" Rust said.
E-mail messages sent to affected addresses are backed up in the system, so no messages will be lost.
Despite the problems, Rust said this is the first major hardware outage that the e-mail system has experienced.
