It is amazing how some people in the Legislature handle the contract issue. \A deal is a deal"" ought to be the normal thing after employers and unions have agreed on a contract. Now some legislators say there is no money. This is something they should have planned for ahead of time, isn't it?
This is just one example of how strange things are getting. Both the university and my union think the deal they have struck is OK and something both parties should go ahead with, to the benefit of all. Why tear up a contract that everyone has fully accepted?
Another example: When one union official called Assembly Speaker John Gard's office to discuss the contract issue, it became very clear that the people there did not understand what the current contract is all about. They did not know some of the most basic facts.
The Teaching Assistant Association and other union members are getting angry and asking, ""Has it come to this?"" At a different level, Nelson Mandela recently said about a certain president: ""He has no foresight and he cannot think properly."" Well, if that's the case at the national level, what can we expect at this level of the Republic(ans)?
In most developed (civilized) countries a contract stands, once agreed upon. This should also be the case in Wisconsin. A deal is a deal!
