There will soon be a new addition to the downtown area: Club Majestic, 115 King St. The old Majestic Theater has been transformed into a dance club and will open its doors to the public on Wednesday, Feb. 19, according to Nick Nice, the creative director for the club.
While it will primarily be a nightclub, the club will try to host a variety of events, including the Wisconsin Film Festival, classic movies and occasional live performances.
Most nights will be 21 and over, except for select live shows, which will be 18 and over, and movies, which will be open to various ages depending on the rating, Nice said. The club can be rented out for private events, boasting a private party room and several VIP areas.
While some clubs primarily play techno or house music, Club Majestic will have several different genres, including indie rock.
\There's going to be a little bit of something for everybody ... We're not trying to be exclusive to any one group of people,"" Nice said.
Nice added that the owners hope to attract clubgoers of all ages, wanting to make both 21- and 51-year-olds feel comfortable. Wednesday and Thursday nights will be geared more toward college students, featuring both experienced and up-and-coming local DJs and no cover charge on Wednesday or Sunday.
The club received a liquor license from the Alcohol License Review Committee last fall, and at today's meeting the committee will finalize the club's license approval. The meeting is expected to go fairly smoothly, according to ALRC member Ald. Judy Olson, District 6. Olson said she is optimistic about the club's opening.
""With the experience of the developers and owners of the Club Majestic we had an excellent application come forward,"" she said.
While the city is trying to promote alternatives to drinking for those under 21, Richard Lyshek, an ALRC member and owner of the bar BullFeathers, 303 N. Henry St., said he is not concerned about an alcoholic nightclub opening.
""As much as people like to say it, there isn't a great demand for non-alcohol venues,"" Lyshek said. ""People like alcohol. Surprise, surprise.\
